We Are Nowhere, And it's Now

Oh San Sebastian. Where do I begin? It's an odd statement, because we were unfortunately only there for one night, but I think it's still my favorite stop on the trip (besides Gibraltar, which is coming in all of Michael's wordy glory). We didn't plan San Sebastian out much at all, since we weren't sure where we were even going that night, so when we arrived at the border city (just about 10 minutes outside of France on the Northern Atlantic coast) we went straight to the tourist office to find out where we could stay. We ended up in a sweet little pensión in the heart of the old part of the city, sleeping on a pullout couch in someone's library. It was perfect.

The first thing we learned was that San Sebastian is, despite it being an incredibly gorgeous resort beach town, very cheap. Our first meal included a beer, a glass of wine, a giant burger, a huge pork and red pepper sandwich, and two coffees, and it ran us 15 euro. We were excited, and continued wandering around the tiny city until around midnight. We came across the town's protest, part of the larger movement happening all over Spain, but by the time we got there it had turned into an all out street party. We purchased a 4 euro bottle of wine and headed back to sit in our tiny balcony taking in the absolute rager that was San Sebastian on a Saturday.

We had caught a glimpse of a bright turquoise, white sanded cove on our way in, so we spent the next morning with some coffee and a shrimp tapa (3 euro...) on the beach before starting our drive to Madrid.  As Michael put it, it looks like the first Pirates of the Caribbean could have been filmed there. It is one place that we have continually been telling people to go, and will probably never stop. Beautiful San Sebastian is a boldfaced must return on our list.
